The Good Rack Guide - Kona Sutra Edition
by charlie
A lot of people seem to have issues finding a decent rack for the 2008 Kona Sutra. Since I have one I thought I would explain the solution that works for mine.
Follow up:
It seems that the main issue with racks on the Sutra is that the mounting points are higher than they are on a normal bike, being on the seat stays, owing to the position of the disc brakes. I have found that the Tubus Logo fits well on the high eyelets and has stood up to a year's commuting abuse well.
In order to fit the rack around the rear discs, it was necessary to use the included spacers to puch the legs of the rack a little wider on both sides.
The other side is a little more complex, as the brake caliper is are close to the rack, but when the rack is on and the brake is off it all fits together well. When the brake is applied, the arm just touches the rack, but it does not seem to interfere with its operation and I have been using it for about a year with no ill-effects.
I use the rack for 20 miles of commuting on bumpy roads ech day and so far it has worked flawlessly. The reduction in flex from the stock rack is amazing. The original rack used to make the bike wags its tail under heavy acceleration, which was pretty offputting in heavy traffic! The Logo is so stiff I sometimes have to check I have any luggage on the rack at all! As a bonus, it fits a reflector or light on the 50mm and 80mm mountings at the back, which is always good as back up.
In conclusion, it's not the cheapest rack, but it fits the Sutra and it works brilliantly.
Rating: 5 gold golden things.
